DIERCKX, Heidi

Heidi Dierckx earned a Ph.D. in 1992 from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and my B.A. and M.A from the University of Durham, England. In 1992 she started teaching at Culver-Stockton College in Missouri and moved in 1998 to Elmira College, where she has taught since. At Elmira College, she teaches courses in the areas of ancient history (Greece, Rome and the Near East), Greek and Roman art and archaeology as well as ancient Greek and classical mythology. She also regularly teaches archaeological excavation methods at the 19th century site of Mark Twain’s summer home outside Elmira. Furthermore she regularly takes students on a month-long trip to Greece and Turkey or Greece and Egypt during the Spring term. Heidi's research areas of interest include Minoan and Mycenaean Archaeology, and lithics technology and raw material sourcing. She specializes in the analysis of chipped and ground stone implements as well as stone vase manufacture techniques from various archaeological sites in East Crete and Mycenae. She spends her summers at INSTAP (Institute of Aegean Prehistory) in Pachia Ammos as a lithics specialist for several sites including the cemetery of Petras, Chrissi Island, Pelekita Cave, Halasmenos. At Mycenae Heidi works as a lithics and small finds specialist and field archaeologist/sector supervisor of the excavations in the Lower Town. She has published in a variety of international publications of classical archaeology, including two festschrifts and several chapters in excavation volumes of sites in East Crete. Heidi has also is working closely with a geologist, Basilios Tsikouras, and they published an article on the procurement of raw material for the Minoan ground stone implements in the Bulletin of the Geological Society of Greece.
