Geological Oceanography

(Maymester) A comprehensive study of the origin and development of the major structural features of the ocean basins and the continental margins. Discussion of the techniques used in obtaining geologic data and the interpretation of sedimentary processes, vulcanism, and the stratigraphy of the ocean basins. Considering the active tectonics in Greece, we could make the geology of Eastern Mediterranean a key teaching component of this course. We can coordinate visits to the Institute of Oceanography and Marine Research in Greece, field excursions nearby in the volcanics of Methana, the active fault system in Mycenae. This course should attract several from the 300+ Marine Science and Geological Sciences majors, but others as well.
